So I "aquired" Guitar Rig 3 last night and was wondering, does anybody know if you have to use the Rig Kontrol with the program? It says you can use it as a standalone but when I have my guitar plugged directly into the computer I can't get any sound. I've tried almost everything and someone from asnother forum said that he can do it straight into the computer using his Mac. The line in on mine works as I tested it with my mic and got sound out of it. Should I be using a certain cord? Any thoughts on this little problem? It looks like a great little program and I'd like to be able to play it until I get my amp. I've done a bunch of searching around and it looks like I am doing everything right.

you don't need a pre-amp.

Just create a new midi profile.

I don't think hes using a mac, and Why would this be MIDI? I would think it has something to do with sound input selection in the preferences of the program. Not sure though, Does it work with the Microphone input. Try that, Or look in the preferences of the program and see if you can select an input source. I could be completly wrong, but thats where I'd begin.. with the microphone. Also computer mics have a plus 15db amplification on the line to begin with so maybe you'd be better off using that..

Midi controllers such as the GR-20 works really well to control the Wah - Volume - ect... pedals in Guitar Rig 3.
I used sonar with guitar rig 3, i set up the GR-20 as a controller, even a pitch wheel on a keyboard would work for expression.

Why you don't get sound.
does your sound card have ASIO drivers... if it doesn't, don't worry but be aware that you will have high latency.

To set up without ASIO, is to set up your sound a "Multimedia drivers"
it's in the settings of Sound Devices in Guitar Rig 3. I used Guitar rig 1, 2 and 3 with a Sound Blaster Live 5.1, cheap card without ASIO, still got sound of it but the latency was horrible (hence why i got me a M-Audio)

hint: a M-audio sound card such as the Audiophile 24/96 is very inexpensive and has Midi input/output and some RCA in and out, even has SPDIF in and out....

multimedia = 100ms latency
ASIO = 5 to 10 ms latency (some good cards have 0 to 5 ms latency)

make sure your input and outputs are well configured, and that your "recording" in your Control panel / Sound and Audio devices / properties are not muted.

hmmm that covers it, should work.

 i thought of something....

that cord of yours.... are you using a Stereo input in your MIC input?

get yourself a Mono 1/4 inch converter Input and use your mic input....

or.... try pulling the cord from the computer a bit, you know...slightly pull on it, don't declip it, the connection might be enough to make the guitar sound... it's because you said that your mic worked, that kinda got me thinking it might be the stereo converter that your are using from Patch cord to line in...

Guitar patch = 1 black line
your 1/4 inch converrter might be 2 black line

Lamens term.

Use this
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/p ... 369734.jpg
(although some of these might not work because they are stereo to mono and plugging a guitar patch is mono)

Not this
http://www.electronicsnmore.com/images/caa18.gif
(although some of these work because they are Mono to stereo converter and work in your Line In)

Edit:
I like this one, i think this one would be great for 2 guitars on Left and right channel

http://cachepe.samedaymusic.com/media/q ... acaec2.jpg

Keep in mind this would be plugged in to your Line In since MIC is Mono

this one is nice too

i'm using guitar rig 3, and it won't put the effect over my guitar live, I changed the inputs and shit , it just won't work that way unless you have the usb rig control that is supposed to come with guitar rig.

it only works like this as far as i know; after you have recorded something you can lay the effect or mix over top of your track.

Anyone know how to get it to work live or no , and yes i'm using my line in which does pick up sound from the guitar

isn't there a way you can record on cubase, and use the guitar rig sounds as a vst overtop of my guitar when recording live??

Thanks for all the input guys.

I am running a simple patch cord from my guitar, into an input that goes from 1/4 to whatever size goes into the line in. I have set the input in Guitar Rig to everything I can imagine, with both mic and line as being the input, and still nothing. I am running it with windows XP so it should work. I tried it with the rig kontrol driver, without it, through AXIO, direct sound, multimedia, still nothing. My mic worked fine, I can hear static from the output, same with the metronome, so it is working, but just not the input. If I do need a preamp, I am just going to wait as an amp is more important, but was hoping this would keep me going until I get my amp. Maybe it is my sound card, I think it is a sigmatel(?). I thought it was a good one, maybe it just can't hadnle it.

Your problem could be related to the cord being stereo where as the instrument patch cord is mono. You might need to get mono to stereo ( or unbalanced to balanced ) adapter. .. If this is the case try pulling the patch cord out of the 1/4 by just a little bit and see if you bump into sound.. Or if your 1/4 to 3/8 is mono or unbalanced your computer probably wants a stereo type input. This is just speculation but could be part of your problem

edit .. I didnt read the above post before i posted. but yeah,, what he said basically .. :)

to use the rig control driver, you need the rig controller, it's a usb hardware device that comes with guitar rig when you purchase it at a store. i'm pretty sure you can't get live sounds with guitar rig without it unless you have some sort of usb to 1/4 guitar jack that tricks your pc to thinking it's the rig control.

rig control 2 pics, they never made rig control 3, 2 is the one it still comes with i believe, even tho it's guitar rig 3 software.

Go to your audio prefs and create a profile. The instructions are on the NI forums.

Hey Treble_Bass....

try monitoring your track....

it's called either Echo or Monitor.... its near your panning and volume on the track controls... also near automate and arm to record...

usually if you don't monitor or echo you can only playback.

have fun with guitar rig 3 it's really awseome, especially the Ultrasonic amp!

enjoy!

there is a part in options where u choose audio devices....if u choose your sound card...the sound should come from computer speakers....if u choose rig control 3 u can output it to an amp, pa or whatever....sorry for being so vague....gf is using other computer with GR3 on it , can pm me for any questions and Id be glad to help. Also are using it as a plug in or stand alone? Plus you will have to configure ASIO to your computers needs.

That's the thing, no matter what input/ouput I choose (I have tried every combination I can think of) nothing happens. I am begining to think maybe it is the patchcord. I will try with another one once I find my damn attachment for it. Thanks for the input guys, as it seems I'm not the only one using it, or atleast trying to, lol.
