Yeah I'm a pretty huge Weights & Measures fan.
We actually opened for Don Cab, albiet the newer, shittier version without Ian Williams.

I was the bass player. I've been playing drums a lot lately but bass is definitely my primary instrument.

I can tell. I've been considering getting a band like this going, have gone at it a few times in the past and never accomplished more than poorly emulating others in the genre in a roundabout way.

I said earlier I don't doubt you in your ability at playing complex time signatures. I just didn't recall hearing them in Tomcat Combat, but then again I only caught half a set and recently watched a few Youtube videos. Don't get me wrong, I really like the band and I'm not knocking you. Anyways, you explained that half of your songs were in 4/4 and most contained 12/8 passages...which is pretty much 4/4, then you proceeded to say that I wouldn't notice your odd time signatures, while I tend to think that I would.
I'm not trying to be as much of a dick as you think I am, but whatever. I'd like to hear some of the odd time signature stuff but I can't find it on the net, so if you have a link post it, but you sound far too pissed for that.

Yes, 12/8 is just a way of saying we played triplets over 4/4

Regardless, I have no reason to prove to you that our songs had non 4/4 time signatures. I know they did, because I was playing them!

But if it will shut you up and get you out of my thread, you can go puzzle over these:

Video - try and count the chorus riff, and the middle breakdown/bridge - the bass and drums are playing in 3/4 (or 3/8 depending on your point of view) while the guitars and keyboard play mostly in 4/4 (I could never really pay attention to them without messing up my own part!)

Myspace- You can hear 'Ponies on Ice' and count the verse however the hell you want. If you think it's 4/4, great, I'm happy for you!

Just FYI, you can tap your foot 1, 2, 3, 4 throughout a song until the cows come home. Doesn't mean it's in 4/4 time, just that you can tap your foot 4 times and start over.
I'm sort of obsessed with this stuff so I could talk about it all day. I'd rather be playing it though, so more bumpage!

It's a hard thing to do; the thing I love about W&M is that it's almost purely reliant on rhythm - it's almost like the guitars and bass are just percussive instruments.
Sometimes I can't even finish listening to the record because it makes me sick how heavy it is, but instead of being heavy in that constant, droning metal way, it's the total opposite.
And yet catchy hooks still abound! Amazing.

Some other bands that take that 'pure rhythmic' approach that I really dig are Turing Machine, and My Disco - just super repetitive, one or two note melodies, octave basslines, but just constantly changing rhythms.

That was actually a somewhat sarcastic comment.

I dig some of the stuff you chose to list as your influences, but, yeeeeeah, it's pretty incredible how seriously you are taking yourself. Do you jerk off in complex time signatures, give the toms a little 7/8 while plucking the bass in a 5/4?

I just listened to "Ponies on Ice" and in my opinion you definitely can tell it is not 4/4 time.
I counted it as 3/4, 4/4, 3/4, 5/4 then 3/4, 6/4, 3/4, 6/4 then the whole thing repeats except on the last measure it's 5/4 time instead of a 6/4 and the first note of the 4/4 time bit is the same note that would've been the 6th note of the 6/4 time part...which is actually kinda neat. It's hard to separate all of the instruments in my head, but that's what I hear.
What I meant by the tapping of the foot bit is that if you can tap 1,2,3,4 and nothing seems off, mainly the accents, than it's probably 4/4 time.
Playing with time signatures is like playing with notes in Jazz, you see how much you can get away with without sounding like a cluster fuck.
Saying things like "you can go puzzle over these" makes you come off as feeling superior, even though that may not be the case.

Yup, just like I said... I was doing that off memory, but that sounds exactly right. I think it comes off sounding pretty smooth to the non technical listener, but either way it's a lot of fun to play, and it was fun to write.

Moxie - sorry that my love of music has offended your indie sensibilities. I'm not going to make any secret of the fact that I love music and am a huge theory nerd. If it turns some people off then it's working perfectly - I'm interested in people who have a firm grasp on complex musical theories and who are interested in exploring new and bizarre ideas with their music. I like bashing 4 on the floor beats, noise, and rhythmless drone, too.
I didn't really make it a big secret since I came right out and said it in my first post. Sorry if it's not punk enough for some but I don't really give a shit. I like what I like and if people just want to listen to shitty rock music power to them. It doesn't interest me so I'm not going to do it! Simple as that really.

I preferred Wombat Combat. And I always hoped they'd cover Wango Tango.

Way better disclaimer than the original post.

Seriously though, good luck finding a band. I would be all over that, but you just don't sound like any fun to play with. If you come up with something original, I will support.

Because they're both instrumental bands?

You're an idiot.
