Got this e-mail today from the McGill student society:

Dear Students and friends:

It is with profound sadness that we learn of the sudden passing of our
colleague, and friend, Chris Driscoll. Chris was a talented drummer
pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at McGill. He was a
member of the celebrated ensemble Mobile Preid.

Our hearts go out to his family and many friends in this difficult time.
Chris was a young man of great humour, kindness, and warmth. We will miss
him deeply.

The funeral will be held this weekend in his home province of P.E.I.
Though to be confirmed, there will be a wake on Thursday, the funeral
service will be Friday a musical tribute will follow on Saturday. A bus
will be leaving for Charlottetown at 8:00 am tomorrow morning, Tuesday,
Jan. 11, from the Roddick Gates. Students wishing to travel to P.E.I.
should contact Steve or Patrick Reid and Jeremy Cain at 807-1730 as soon
as possible.

A memorial service will be held at McGill in Chris’ honour sometime next
week.

Students seeking support should contact McGill Counseling Services
http://www.mcgill.ca/counselling and more information on his death can be
found at http://www.pei.cbc.ca.

Again, we extend our deepest sympathy to his family and all of his friends
at McGill.

Sincerely,

David Matthews
President, MUSA

I had the chance to meet Chris this past summer during a gig at St. James Gate. He was very friendly and easily one of the most unique and flavorful drummers I've ever seen play. Time to take stock and count the old blessings, I propose.

Giant heart hanging over throne
Pumping blood
To skinny flailing arms
Interpretating beats

The center of the Mobile
Floating over skins
Supporting, dancing horns with strings
In perfect jaggged balance

Smashing time into bits
And reorganizing it, without elaspe, into new signatures

Rhythm's soul mate has walked on

I've known Chris for a while. He was an amazing drummer with talent and taste. I heard that his jazz band was 5th in Canada. He was a great guy who will be greatly missed by all.

I can remember playing paint ball with him. I shot him right between two trees, it was a crazy shot and a good laugh was had by all.

His jazz combo, "Mobile Preid", with fellow PEI-native and McGill jazz major Pat Reid, were actually ranked 5th in the world for young jazz ensemble by the International association of jazz educators. Pretty amazing.
Also they had a tribute concert for him in PEI on Sunday, which I heard was incredible.

I was out job hunting today, and someone noticed I was from PEI... she had gone home for the funeral and said it was the perfect way to say goodbye
