hi everybody,
here it is - the official announcement! tickets for scenery 2 go on sale tuesday at iland skateboards and snowboards. they're 5 bucks. the video is 95% done and the release date as well as product manufacturing are all set. i don't even know where to start. please feel free to post comments and questions to this thread and i'll answer em right away.
scenery 2 is a two year effort by well over 100 people to document skateboarding and snowboarding on the island. a sprawling skateboard adventure, we tried to hit as many spots in cbrm as we could, taking advantage of the stock goods as well as venturing to new parts of the island. we were lucky to meet awesome people all over cape breton who love skating just as much as we do.
we went on five road trips which took us to places like port hawkesbury, cheticamp, baddeck, antigonish, halifax, moncton and charlottetown. we met awesome people everywhere and always had our boards at the ready. never far from my trusty generator, we lit up the gorgeous concrete parks in moncton and charlottetown, going till 4 and 5 in the morning. hell, steve leblanc drove from north sydney to moncton on a whim at 10pm one night to meet us for a road trip. seven capers with skateboards far away from home hoping for some dry weather is the stuff that memories are made of. we met awesome people on the messageboard who offered us places to stay every time we were away from the home turf.
we slept in my car in cheticamp after skating the port hawkesbury park till dawn in august 2003. we awoke to people from margaree dropping off a manual pad because they heard guys from sydney were coming filming.
i got back into snowboarding this season and went hard filming at the hill. i had the pleasure of meeting stew varley and jon chew, two stand up guys that are ridiculously good riders. it was also great to see tons of familiar faces from skating at the hill. the snowboard footage is beautiful and some of the most filmic imagery i've been able to capture yet.
i still love the first scenery video although it has its share of technical and artistic problems. but i set out to make a skate video in under a year with no experience. now i have a gl2, a death lens and a video under my belt and this is waht i came up with.
the skateboarders have stepped up their game in every respect. old schoolers and little kids are all busting. craig davis is home from a 5 year skate/snow adventure in bc. guys from the first video have reappeared to take their game up a notch, and newcomers like max hanson are tearing it apart. chew and stew have a sequence of so many rodeos, 900's and backflip variations that your head will be left spinning. dennis mccormick nails gaps and giant technical lines like nothing. steve macintyre completely reworked his style. i recovered from acl reconstruction to somehow end up with a full part. george pink is pure technical. the montage parts were put togehter from 600 tricks and i'm not talking about curb ollies. zach macphee nails a kickflip over the schwartz 9 like nothing, snowboarders like ned english and steve jones go huge - then you got cats like dan cameron who basically live to skate. this shows in the footage. you can watch a guy like george timbury skate so burly it's pure northside. dj dauphney from new waterford kickflipped oil drop - a gap i previously thought would never even get ollied. brad lotherington rips everything apart. steve leblanc skates fast and hard and doesn't mind getting his truck dirty to get us to a spot. i could talk about these guys for hours - their skating and riding is inspiring.
this is a cblocals/i-land production.. i originally set out to do this myself, but it ended up that all the guys in the video that had parts were on the iland team. i've known darcy campbell for around 10 years and he is co-producing the video and his help has been amazing. i got love for all the shops around here, but darcy and i-land have been really great to me. they understand what this video means to me and got involved in a way that made it so much better without changing the concept one bit.
i don't know how to thank the people involved. stevie mac was there on all the road trips.. george timbury can fix anything and his dad always made sure the car was in working order before a trip.. ned english has mad generator fixing skills.. chew's mom showed up for a mission with lemonade and granola bars. stu's mom dropped by with a wheelbarrow to help us shovel snow.. jeff in moncton and jamie in charlottetown thanks for the places to stay.. justin mattie in phk you're sick dude.. all of the cheticamp guys and the dudes that are coming down from pleasant bay it just blows my mind.. all my roomates at 20 warne have been incredible to me and matty o'connor even made it out on two road trips.. jacqueline you're a killer friend thanks for listening to me ramble about the video all the time.. anthony cooper has helped me tons with differnet video editing and shooting techniques - he's the guy that does the videos in halifax and he's always on msn to listen to my video woes. sean macgillivray is doing a ridiculous amount of work to make the foldout booklet for this video something special.. steve wadden donated a bunch of totally pro photography work.. mike collins and nick you guys rule.. all the glace bay guys i'm sorry i didn't make it out but i got some tight shots of nathan susin representin. props to everybody in pei and moncton you guys rule!
people have donated music and even recorded just for this video. i think the soundtrack is a step up from the first video, especially in terms of production value. i'm glad i got some of that old school 4 track stuff in the first video, but this time i decided to go with all studio stuff and it's going to make a difference. i'm also stoked we have bands from pei halifax moncton and newfoundland on this. not to mention a shitload of cb material.
i love skateboarding with all of my heart and i hope you guys check out this vid on the 28th.
