Hi all,

Just a friendly reminder to all of you who are missing your daily doses of CBC Radio that CKDU's very own Soundtrack of our Locked Out Lives is going to be premiering in about 15 minutes.

Host Laura Graham, a CKDU alum and currently locked out CBC employee, is going to be bringing in CBC employees every Tuesday from 2:30-3:30 to keep their voices on air.

We're happy to have them here with us for the duration of the lock out and to be able to show our support for our colleagues.

Listen at:
CKDU 97.5 FM
http://www.ckdu.ca

Thanks,
Michael/CKDU

I'd listen, but they just moved me to a new desk at work (boo!) and there aren't enough power outlets for my computer and monitor as well as my boombox.

Yes, I said boombox.

Poor CBC...

First they go on strike then they get locked out for going on strike and meanwhile the CBC sounds pretty good right now.

The pay was good, the hours good, the perks good and still it's not good enough? I know a lot of people who could create great shows for the CBC and wouldn't ask nearly as much. To start with, ask the volunteers at CKDU. Heck, I'd do a show for free... Better still, have some of the volunteers at CKDU work the CBC for pay see how long the ex CBC people would work for free at CKDU.

The CBC people are using CKDU and not in a good way. It's to further their cause. It borders on propaganda. Whatever happened to balanced journalism?

I say get back to work and be grateful for the things you have.

I know I am.

Anyway, it had to be said.

Which CBC are you listening to? I flipped over to it yesterday just to check in to see what they were playing, and it was a re-re-re-repeat of Richardson's Round-up from 2003.

So put some CKDU shows on the CBC airwaves and besides, it's always interesting to hear some of the archives...

A whole bunch of unbelievably misinformed blathering.

Wow.
Wow.
Wow.

You remind me of the guy who wrote the letter to the Daily News this week, stating how grateful he was that CBC was on strike, so now we could all "think for ourselves."

Where are you *getting* this stuff from? First, they didn't go on strike, they had a vote where the majority of the union was in favour of striking, and before they could actually strike, they were locked out. Second, it's not about pay or benefits. Do some actual research, please, and then report back to us.

CKDU is not being "used," and they are not the only campus/community station to offer this much appreciated service.

Jesus fuck, buddy.

Okay, so they 'voted' to go on strike - it's still the same... Semantics.

I'd go on a hunger strike if I thought it would prevent Jian Gomeshi from ever getting near a microphone ever again....and I have to admit, hearing Richardson's Roundup repeates is not a good thing.

How about some Gilmore's Albums? Or Glenn Gould audio documentaries?

I swear, these scabs have no imagination...

For anyone who actually cares to understand what's really going on with this lockout, I present the following. It offers factual information as well as steps you can personally take to make a difference in this lockout situation. How on earth would "hiring" amateur broadcasters for free help public broadcasting? I'm not sure you understand the difference between a public broadcaster and a community radio station, Phil, but they have very different mandates and responsibilities.

I don't know if this individual would want her name shared on a public message board, so out of respect, I'll leave it off. Chances are you've all heard her work:

"First, let me tell you what we're fighting for. This dispute isn't about money. It's not about benefits. My colleagues and I have been locked out
because CBC management wants the right to contract out all new work at the corporation "without restriction". It would never have to hire a permanent staff member again. It's a major step towards creating a disposable workforce, one the corporation can hire and fire at whim. In the long run, it could mean that all CBC programs would be produced by profit-oriented companies, not from people like me who've dedicated their lives to public broadcasting. To me, it's an issue worth fighting for.

Management claims it's being "fiscally reponsible" with our tax dollars. In reality, it's been expanding the ranks of overpaid managers, while reducing the number of people who are actually producing the programming.

We want to resolve this dispute as quickly as possible. We think loyal CBC listeners deserve the high-quality programming they've come to expect.

PLEASE take a few minutes to e-mail or send a fax to CBC Vice President Jane Chalmers and federal Heritage Minister Liza Frulla. Let them know that you value CBC Radio, and that you support the thousands of CBC producers, reporters and technicians who have been locked out. Encourage them to resolve this labor dispute quickly.

Jane Chalmers, Vice President of English Radio, CBC:
email: Jane_Chalmers@cbc.ca
fax: 416.205.3573
Hon. Liza Frulla, Minister of Canadian Heritage
email: Frulla.L@parl.gc.ca
fax: 613-995-6404
phone: 613-995-6403

Also, please get in touch with federal Industry Minister Joe Fontana and urge him to legislate us back to work, because of the essential service the CBC provides to Canadians. There are parts of the country that can't get any information on radio or TV right now because there's no regional CBC operating.

email: Fontana.J@parl.gc.ca
phone: (613) 992-0805
fax: (613) 992-9613

And finally, please forward this to other CBC Radio fans in your contact
list. We need every bit of help we can get!"

Lots of people are grateful to have any job.

A lot of shows on CKDU sound just as good, if not better than what CBC has to offer.

Some shows on CBC sound worse than shows on CKDU.

Many people who volunteer on CKDU want to work for the CBC.

Do you?

Hey Phil,

You don't have a clue about what you're talking about.
