I remember coming to Halifax pre-84 and going to Backstreet Imports ... I think it was on Prince, even then ... London Calling was playing, first time I'd heard it ... then there was that Wendy O Williams shotgun poster ... so many formative memories in a ten-minute visit ...

i met Essen there in 1987. maybe grade 10 or 11. I hope people remember he's one of the founding fathers of the Halifax punk/rock scene and that Backstreets fueled it with good dope.

In 1982, I had this idea that the video games sound, sounded like synths burbling to each other. So me and the late Wendy Geller and David R. Barteaux set up our synths one October 9th and did a saturday afternoon manitee there to play along to tthe noise of these machines.

It was unbelievable!

People were lining up at the door trying to get in. Greg Clark, who ran the space, was gleefully counting his money. The performance was called 'Electronic Video Arcade Music' (EVAM) and I can say arguably that we were the first band that ever were booked by Greg Clark! And since it was electronic music, we set the ambience for shops to come (Revolution Records - now Rock Candy?)

It's all documented too, both on video and audio. One day it would be interesting to see who's on video, and how they looked.

If you were there that day, you're probably on the video.

I loved Backstreets. Cool music, lots of microdot, drunk sailors hassling punks......

Essen always fondly remembered.....

Pete, call me.

I played tempest ...badly,.. in mid 80's.

Seem to remember the toilets being very popular there .lol

Nearly died the first time i was asked to go to the bank and get change. i felt I had finally arrived...oh how i laugh now!

Oh, since you asked (pm) this is Laura Norkett now Laura Lui. Maybe not a name familiar to all but those that remember are the ones who really mattered. They are my family, I had no other then. They took care of me, some fed me ( thanks Mrs Bevbo) some looked out for me ( thanks wdw and K) and maybe even some gave me the love I didn't get anywhere else (you know who you are.)
Backstreet wasn't just a place, it was a home, and not just to me either.

That Quicksilver pinball game...man that was great.

And Tetris....lots and lots of Tetris.

And Chipman's Elderberry Wine. 14% alcohol, $7 a bottle...best cheap drunk EVER.

Oh, and lest we forget......SWIVELHEAD.

Ah swivelhead... and what was his beardy friend called, the guy who could frequently be found under the bushes of the library?

Swivelhead, ... bet he never got hit by a car though!

I went there in 88-89 summers when I was back from wherever dad was posted. In 1990 I started DJing at the Flamingo and when the shitty bands were on stage I went and played at Backstreet, until I missed my curtain call one night and was told to stay in the "fucking bar you asshole" while working.

Good times, good times.

...And there was the forest in the sky.

Does anyone remember in '87 or '88 the guys who came from T.O.(?) i think ,and threw a brick at Shane. There was a standoff at the historic properties like somethin out of Grease. There were the out-of-town guys and I can't remember who from our lot on the ground and crowds lining the sides. I was there, and likely to have been sober, but can't remember what happened.
